SEATTLE, WA, USA
- This is an early sketch from 2004 for plans to the outside.
The idea is to have a bridge and studio at the
back of the house and a walk out deck at the front, primarily to
make the elevation change easier to deal with. The plans also
include a small walk down to a new apartment in the basement of the
house.
- Scope of Work: New Concrete
Retaining Wall, Concrete pad, New Deck and bridge to second floor,
New Roof Deck and Entry into house at second level, New Workshop at
the back of the house, New front deck and walk down to future
apartment

SEATTLE, WA, USA -2008
- In progress construction photos showing unenclosed workshop and
bridge.
- Picture taken from former back door of dwelling.
- The architecture of the new addition, although integrated with
the house, was designed to stand aside from the architectural style
of the existing 1905 house, without pretending to be built in the
same time period. By creating a distinct difference and managing the
transition conflicting architectural styles can exist together
without being at odds with one another.
- Perhaps the most important part of the bridge design was that
one could walk out from the 2nd floor office directly to the street
level without transitions. Lots of care was taken with the concrete
retaining wall to make this possible. Coincidentally, the grade at
the back of the house was within a 1/4" of the second floor height.
A new French door was added to the house with in-keeping details in
place of the old window. The freedom of walking out straight to the
street has greatly improved access and freedom of movement in a lot
that was challenged by and equivalent about 3 floors of grade change
from front to back.
- Since the mail was received to the back of the house a mail box
was introduced by salvaging the old cast iron furnace from the house
remodel. This saved the mail man a walk to the back door
- Seen from the back street the workshop (aka 'temple') became
more Japanese after a trip to Japan.

40 STOREY RESIDENTIAL TOWER
SEATTLE, WA - Bumgardner 2009
- Rendering showing base concept for 400ft residential tower with
extra 40ft allowance for amenity and mechanical in downtown Seattle.
- The tower was situated on a very constrained site with 4 stories
of above grade parking, large restaurant, retail and residential
lobby.
- My duties as Project Architect were Structural, MEP, SCL, Civil
Curtainwall, and other consultant coordination. I also designed
units, provided 3d renderings, Design review packages and some
Project Management, detailing and drafting in Revit and by hand.

FIVE STAR INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL BEIJING,
CHINA DRAGON WALL INTENT - NBBJ
- 2006
- Rendering showing our modified 3d
design intent drawing for the Grand Stair and the 'dragon wall' in the
main hotel lobby (not my rendering)
- Our stair concept was based on
the flowing skirt of a ballet dancer and its airy feel was important to
our design
- Working on a shoe-string budget
without consulting engineers, it was necessary to convey a more
buildable solution to the Grand Stair design to the less ambitious
engineering team in Beijing. I altered our design to concentrate the
structural strength of the stair at inner helical portion; the welded
plate stair structure cantilevered from the plate steel inner helix to
maintain the thin outer profile at the edge of the stair. In turn curved
aluminum shoes were fastened at the edge of the stair structure to
support the structural glass guard rail and handrail.

FIVE STAR INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL BEIJING,CHINA DRAGON WALL INTENT - NBBJ - 2006
- Perforated copper became the
final material selection for the 'dragon wall' . I designed the cut
openings in the 15 meter wall to be more flowing.
- Perforations were laid out
literally in the form of a Chinese dragon based on 3 rotated and
masked perforation patterns for a random effect.
- Probably our most ambitious
schematic design proposal called for thousands of back lit glass
balls to clad the 15 m. '9 dragon wall'; In order to make this
possible it was necessary to nest thousands of blown glass balls in
a gabion-basket like arrangement.
- I drew the following detailed
section and elevation as part of a thick series of design intent
drawings to convey our intents in a more realistic manner to the
client in Beijing who was not necessarily familiar with our building
practice and technologies.

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL & CONDOS SEATTLE, WA, USA
BUILDING ARCHITECT - NBBJ - 2006
- My primary tasks involved
condominium MEP coordination and detailing
- MEP coordination became a
full-time job on this project; the clients were given ultimate
freedom to build what they pleased in their spaces, consequently the
building shell and core was massaged to fit these goals.
- The project also contained
numerous architects, interior designers and consultants all striving
to do their best for their clients.
- In order to maximize on the
available square footage (approx @ $2500/sq. ft) and ceiling
heights, it was necessary to tightly fit all building systems around
the changing desires of the interior design. Methods of
tightly fitting in building systems to accommodate the interiors and
the already designed curtain wall system were developed.
- 3D Studio max mages to the left
show visual alternates to the exhaust venting at the curtain wall
skin. The detail shows the
custom UL listed exhaust vent solutions developed with consultants
and manufacturers for FP, dryer and range and methods of
eliminating the return ducting by providing an open air ceiling
return.

- Details at curtain wall.

For example much of the penthouse screen wall support at the roof
was directly supported by the extension of the column structure. The
intersection of the curtain wall, structure, roofing and outer wall
constructions proposed a potentially problematic area; it became
necessary to adequately detail a watertight solution to prevent any
possibility of water leakage.

RESIDENCE
REMODEL
SEATTLE, WA, USA
2004
- Basically, I took a year off to labor over my own home. A real
gem: This house was home to loud bands, bikers and many cats over
the years and was in such bad shape that many counter-bidding
contractors were turning around and walking out of the place.
- This 1905 craftsman, although filled with character and original
woodwork was so bad from the inside that just about every surface
was removed and put back up. In the process new plumbing, electrical
and furnace with ducting were installed, cathedral ceilings with
skylights were installed; a new kitchen was put in and the
downstairs was opened up.
- The image to the left is a 3d scaled schematic that I used to
decide on design changes and basic material choices on the inside.
This way of working proved to be invaluable and extremely accurate
in the projects final outcome and has become my chosen way of
designing any project whether with a client or for myself.

MERCEDES BENZ
SHOWROOM
IN-HOUSE COMPETITION
THOMAS BAUMANN ARCHITECT - 1994
- For one of our office's
biggest clients we had an in-house competition to create a show-room
to display Mercedes merchandising. The idea was to have a flexibly
arranged space and display; Etched glass panels were hung from a
beam track hoist similar to that found in a car plant. The lit glass
panels held shelves and Mercedes merchandise and could be moved into
a variety of configurations or moved entirely out of the way.

FRANKLINSTRASSE
MIXED-USE BLDG BERLIN,
GERMANY
THOMAS BAUMANN ARCHITECT - 1994
- This mixed use project was
permitted under many of the same regulations that are part of a LEED
certified building in the US today. Germany has always been one of
the leaders in 'Green' and some of its projects of the 80's match
sustainable goals of today in the US. For example, for daylight
reasons, all office buildings were and average of about 10 meters
wide for daylight and must all contain adequate bike storage.
- In the early 90's permitting
a set of drawings required 16 sets of drawings for plan reviews. The
offices of the west were required to employ workers from the former
east Germany. Building and architecture was booming and just about
every famous architect making their mark in Berlin. Foreigners such
as myself could find work by just walking into an office asking for
a job in English.

TOWER
COMPETITION
TORONTO, CANADA
BALDWIN & FRANKLIN ARCHITECT- 1991
- Working for the same
architects that designed the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada, Ned
Baldwin (the same architect that designed the CN Tower had
become the world authority in Tower Design), consequently, the firm
had to turn down many consultant offers when we worked on this
competition.
- The best part about this
project was understanding the functional design aspects of a
communications tower over a regular building; the observation
aspects of the tower become a secondary concern. The structure of
this tower (primarily post-tensioned cables imbedded in concrete)
took a 90 degree turn when it met the ground, the size of this
'cable tunnel' became so large (perhaps a storey tall) that it
became a challenge to work the parking garage and functional spaces
around it.

RCPSC- HEAD
OFFICE
OTTAWA, CANADA
MURRAY & MURRAY ARCHITECTS - 1988
- This is a remodel from a
working convent. Although I felt somewhat guilty about relocating
the nuns, (which I had to face one day while measuring) the building
underwent a much needed transformation from the dismal state of the
existing interior.
- Part of the challenge was to
make the circulation functional and insert a power plant into the
building. The interior courtyard was used as a central lobby and
housed skylights and a mechanical room above. Care was taken to try
to separate the existing exterior walls from the new portions of the
building.
- The existing chapels were
turned into a conference room and library.

GLASGOW ARTIST
COMMUNITY MACKINTOSH SCHOOL OF ARCH MASTERS THESIS PROJECT - 1995
- The Mackintosh School of
Architecture and Glasgow School of Art are joined under the
University of Glasgow, Scotland.
- I was enrolled in the 'Urban
Building' program, which was a combination of Architecture and Urban
Design Studies
- The Glasgow Artist community
is an urban redevelopment project designed to bring Glasgow back to
its roots at the river Clyde. The area is designed to be rejuvenated
through the extension of the popular walking streets, Sauchiehall
and Buchanan Streets, into a shunned area of the city and beyond the
void created by a large shopping centre and inner-city expressway.
In turn also establishing a connection to south bank of the river
with a series pedestrian linked multi-level nodes integrated into
the existing fabric.

A RYERSON
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY FINAL YEAR THESIS PROJECT -
1991
- Acronym for 'A Self
Sufficient Research Oriented Community in the Arctic'
- The idea: A sustainable,
self-sufficient 'Biosphere' in one of the most inhospitable regions
on earth; Alert, NWT, Canada - the most northern town in Canada;
close to the North Pole. Permafrost extends 60m or more below the
earth surface at this latitude and it is almost always dark.
- Catenary ice domes were
created as a primary shield against the weather using inflatable
structures and water mixed with sawdust. The many linked domes (an
image similar to large scale collection of soap bubbles) would be
linked together and carved out to form an outer shell. The ice
structure would expectedly creep with gravity to form a series of
catenary domes. Columns would be kept frozen by drilling conductors
deep into the earth.
- Within the primary structure
the air temperature would be kept around freezing. Living
structures, farms and livestock and community buildings would
populate the interior as part of the closed living cycle.
